90.3 WCPN ideastream®: Stories from the Line

Stories from the Line

As President-elect Obama, Governor Strickland and other officials grapple with the deepening recession and seek to generate new jobs for the growing ranks of the unemployed, ideastream® has initiated an on-going multiple-media series of reports, interviews and programs to spotlight the jobless here in Ohio and the special impact the recession is having on communities, especially those that are heavily dependent on one industry or one employer.

In Stories from the Line, we have profiled workers who’ve lost their jobs or seen business slow to a crawl in retail, real estate, the service and manufacturing sectors.  In the weeks and months ahead, we will continue to broaden the series across every major sector of the economy. The aim is to connect the dire statistics of this economy with the faces and voices of the unemployed, to hear of their struggles, how they are surviving and what they need or expect from government and the private sector.

In the course of this coverage we are also looking for solutions and creative responses to the crisis such as the community of Norwalk’s coming together to help save the furniture factory there when it hit bankruptcy. Along the way we are providing information on unemployment benefits, explaining why only half the unemployed qualify for any assistance and raising questions about the need for immediate revisions.

Finally, we are taking a special look at some of Ohio’s communities that are hardest hit such as Wilmington and the devastation from losing the DHL distribution hub; Lordstown and the ups and downs GM’s plight is having there; and Anna, Ohio the home to one of three Honda plants in the state. It is thriving but still threatened if any of the big three U.S. automakers goes under because of the way parts suppliers for all automakers are interconnected.

Stories from the Line: Towns on the Edge premiered on WVIZ/PBS on Tuesday, January 27. View the program online.

The majority of this continuing coverage will be interviews and reports for 90.3 WCPN. In addition, The Sound of Ideas will focus on this subject, along with segments on Feagler & Friends and TV specials on WVIZ/PBS.
