On April 17, 1996, pianist/composer and band leader Thelonious Monk was posthumously awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Citation from Columbia University. Beginning in 1917, The Pulitzer Prize has been awarded each year. The Pulitzer Citation has had six previous awardees in the field of music before Monk. ideastream Music Director Bobby Jackson speaks with Sig Gissler, the Administrator for Pulitzer Prizes, pianist composer and Pulitzer Prize panelist Muhal Richard Abrams, Library of Congress recording lab supervisor, Larry Appelbaum, legendary Jazz Host Phil Schaap and jazz guitarist and Monk devotee, Steve Khan about Monk’s impact and legacy on today’s music.
