Tenor saxophonist Benny Golson turned 80 on January 25th. The milestone allows us to look back at a career filled with accomplishments Golson is the composer of a number of jazz standards including: “Whisper Not,” “I Remember Clifford,” “Killer Joe,” and “Stablemates.” Golson co-led the popular Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer. Benny’s own dates have praised as always being filled with memorable melodies, as well as his distinct solo style. ideastream’s evening jazz host Dan Polletta looked at three key events in Golson’s career, involving his relationship with three jazz greats: John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey.
