Ohio's democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says she's confident Cuyahoga County's Board of Elections will have a successful election on Tuesday. Since late December the county has been undergoing a rapid $3 million dollar switch from electronic voting machines to optical scan paper ballots. ideastream®:'s Mhari Saito reports.
Secretary of State Brunner toured Cleveland’s old Halle Building warehouse yesterday. She saw the fruit of two months of hard labor: A cavernous space ready to scan Cuyahoga County’s paper ballots on election day. In late December, Brunner broke a tie vote to force the county to mothball about $20M million dollars worth of electronic voting machines and make a fast switch to paper ballots. Brunner says after several troubled elections with electronic voting machines, Cuyahoga County officials are optimistic about this Tuesday.
Jennifer Brunner: They’re very hopeful that for the first time in many years that what not only Ohio and this community, but the nation will see coming from Cuyahoga County is an election without question.
Brunner would not guess when results would be complete. She has said that she would take responsibility for the rapid switch. Voter turnout and national interest will be high on Tuesday, an election that could determine the winner of the Democratic Presidential primary.
Brunner: We were really hoping that we would be under the radar as it were but as we find ourselves so often in Ohio, we’re smack dab in the middle.
Today is the last day to vote early at the Board of Elections. Local polls are open Tuesday from 6:30am to 7:30 pm. Mhari Saito, 90.3.
