Making Change: Land Trust Merger: Shaping the Landscape of Northeast Ohio

There's a quiet revolution underway that could reshape the landscape of Northeast Ohio - or rather, help keep the shape it already has. On January 1st, eight different land trusts from Sandusky to the Pennsylvania border will come together to become one regional organization. The goal of the group is to protect thousands of acres of land that might otherwise be lost to development and urban sprawl. As part of Making Change: Building the Region's Future, ideastream's Karen Schaefer reports on an effort that may ultimately help to preserve the character of our region.

Debating the Inner Belt

A proposed revamping of Cleveland's inner belt has local leaders debating various options. But since most of the money to pay for it is funneled through the Ohio Department of Transportation, that agency holds the ultimate decision-making authority. In the past few weeks, the Cuyahoga and Cleveland Planning Commissions have pressed ODOT to evaluate other alternatives. But ODOT seems locked in its own plan. If Cleveland doesn't approve it the project could founder - with millions of federal dollars diverted to other projects instead. ideastream's Lisa Ann Pinkerton reports.

Lake Erie & Land Use

Most of us can recognize pollution when it comes out of a sewer pipe or a smokestack. But it's harder to see - and control - the pollutants that run off our city streets, lawns and farm fields. Now new research at Ohio State University shows that the impact of those pollutants is changing as we change the way we use the land. And that's having an effect on Lake Erie. Yesterday a group of researchers assembled at Lorain County Community College in Elyria for a conference on the delicate balancing act between land use and water quality. ideastream's Karen Schaefer was there.

Books as Gifts for the Holidays

The holiday shopping season has begun and more than a few of us will be putting books under the tree, next to the menorah, or both. But, books are tricky - do you get the book you loved or want to read, or the one you think someone else might want? And how do you know if it's any good? We get stumped, so we asked morning anchor Dan Moulthrop to talk to someone who gets paid to know books. Jim McPeak runs several branch libraries in the Cuyahoga County system, and he works out of the Mayfield branch.
