Sure they're annoying, but science knows the common fruit fly is a lot more than just a pest. Fruit flies are crucial to our understanding of the human immune system. Scientific researchers worldwide use them and other model organisms to learn about genetics, metabolism, physiology, and behavior. On the next Sound of Ideas, a Science café discussion with local researchers on how fruit flies are telling us so much about ourselves. Monday at 9 on 90.3.

Today we preview the new PBS documentary 'Slavery by Another Name,' with Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian Douglas A. Blackmon. Plus Case Western Reserve University's Mary Davis reports on Fashion Week in New York City and spotlights the acclaimed film 'Bill Cunningham New York.' And we share a short panel discussion on the state of opera in Northeast Ohio with The Cleveland Institute of Music's David Bamberger, The Plain Dealer's Don Rosenberg, and Dorota Sobieska of Opera Circle.

Cleveland's water department produces a fine product: Clean, crisp tap water. But customer service woes, an aging network of underground pipes and a stiff increase in rates have many customers howling. None louder than Westlake, which is exploring a plan to buy water from neighboring Avon Lake. Cleveland officials say such a defection will be a lot more expensive than Westlake leaders are letting on. Water wars, Tuesday at 9:00 on The Sound of Ideas.
