Is My Email Message About an NPR Funding Emergency Real?
It depends on what email you're getting. Up until Spring 2005, the email you probably received focused on a "project" started by 2 Northern Colorado University students who wanted to test the power of the Internet. The email started circulating in 1995 - we keep trying to tell everyone it's a hoax, but the story has persisted for years.

But, since the Spring of '05, life has imitated "hoax". Starting with the emergence of allegations of political interference by several key CPB executives, there is a new fresh batch of email petitions from the advocacy group MoveOn and others. These emails document a situation - as of the early summer of 2005 - that is real. As the climate has heated up around public broadcasting, culminating in an early summer vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to alter funding for public TV and radio, news stories have brought this drama into the public eye. Time will tell how many emails will be generated about this particular funding crisis, but they all stem from a potentially challenging time for public broadcasting.

Back to the earlier hoax email. There are several stops along the internet that outline this. Here's one from NPR, and another from the internet's leading website about urban myths.

One thing remains clear - The best way to support NPR is by making a donation to 90.3 WCPN. If you receive an e-mail asking for your support, please let people know it's just an old hoax making the rounds again.
