About 90.3 WCPN: History

After several years of planning and negotiations by a group of visionary volunteers, 90.3 WCPN signed on the air in 1984.

Cleveland Public Radio is the successor to pioneer radio station WBOE, which was, in 1938, the first federally licensed educational broadcast facility in the nation. Over the past 14 years, 90.3 WCPN has built on WBOE’s creative spirit, developing a public radio station that presents high-quality local, national and international news along with jazz music and talk programming.

Through this consummate blend, the board of trustees, community advisory board and staff are consistently working to improve 90.3 WCPN’s service to the community. This refinement process is an on-going pursuit to provide excellent public radio that meets the needs of northeast Ohio’s diverse audience.

As a community-based public radio station, 90.3 WCPN has a strong commitment to provide in-depth news, jazz and intelligent talk that strives to inspire people to reflect upon events in their community and around the world. The station operates in concert with a mission statement that reflects this commitment.
