The Inamori Ethics Prize
September 4, 2008
Sponsored by the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence at Case Western Reserve University

The Inamori Ethics Prize honors outstanding international leaders who demonstrate exemplary ethical leadership and whose actions and influence have greatly improved the condition of humankind.  The inaugural prize will be awarded to Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., a renowned geneticist and former Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health who is noted for his landmark discoveries and his consistent emphasis on the importance of ethical and legal issues in genetics.  His laboratory has discovered genes responsible for cystic fibrosis, neurofibromatosis, Huntington’s disease, adult onset diabetes and Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, a dramatic form of premature aging.

Dr. Collins will be featured at a free lecture and symposium on September 4, at Severance Hall at Case Western Reserve University, from 1:00pm – 3:30pm. More information or call (216) 368-2456.

Sparx Gallery Hop
Get ready to hop through Cleveland’s art districts and festivals for free. It’s all part of the Sparx Gallery Hop! Experience the Art museum’s Chalk Fest, the Greater Cleveland Art and Gallery Festival at the Galleria, and the Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival. Free Trolleys will connect all 5 districts and RTA’s new Health line will connect Public Square and University Circle for the first time. Gallery Hop takes place Saturday September 20th, 11am to 11pm and Sunday the 21st from noon – 5pm. Maps, locations and free trolley passes are located here.

Vatican Splendors: from Saint Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican Museums and The Swiss Guard at the Western Reserve Historical Society now through September 7, 2008
Vatican Splendors is one of the largest collections of art, documents and historically significant objects illustrating the Vatican’s impact on history and culture through 2,000 year.  Approximately 200 rare objects will be presented which includes mosaics, paintings, papal rings, a recreation of St. Peter’s tomb and much more.  Many of these works have never before been outside Vatican City.  After this regionally exclusive and limited tour, the items featured in Vatican Splendors will return to Rome where they cannot be absent for more than a year.  Vatican Splendors is presented by the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums of Ohio.  Tickets available at any Ticketmaster outlet, on line at vaticansplendors.com or 888 5 VATICAN.

Get to know Einstein the scientist and Einstein the man in this unprecedented exhibition that explores the life and theories of one of the greatest scientists of all time.
Albert Einstein changed the world and our understanding of it.  He established the existence and sizes of molecules and explained light as both particles and waves.  His Special Theory of Relativity part of which linked matter and energy in the famous equation E=mc², paved the way to unleashing atomic energy.  This fascinating exhibit explores Einstein, not only as a scientific genius who reconfigured our concepts of space and time, but also as a complex man actively engaged in the social and political issues of the day. Akron Art Museum - California as Muse: The Art of Arthur & Lucia Mathews

This exhibition represents the rediscovery of San Francisco-based husband and wife Arthur (1860-1945) and Lucia Mathews (1870-1955), leaders of the Arts and Crafts style in California and creators of luminous paintings, stylish furniture and dazzling decorative objects.  In addition to their landscape paintings and images of women in nature, the exhibition in cludes tables, desks, frames, screens, lamps, candlesticks and vases that the couple designed at their Furniture Shop, their studio in downtown San Francisco which they operated from 1906 – 1920.
