Making Change: Renewable Energy

After living with widely fluctuating - and generally skyrocketing - energy prices for months, Americans are showing more interest these days in alternatives to fossil fuels. But for some, the desire to increase the country's use of renewable energy - like solar or wind power - is nothing new. Beating the Cost of Natural Gas: Home Weatherization

Are you an energy hog? That's what the Bush administration is asking Americans facing soaring natural gas prices in the wake of lost production following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This winter residents in the Midwest - the part of the country most dependent on natural gas for heating - could see monthly bills more than double what they were last year. So even if you already set your thermostat to 68, maybe the government is right in thinking it's time to dust off some old energy conservation tips. ideastream's Karen Schaefer reports.

The Republican Revolution: An Interview with Newt Gingrich

More than ten years ago, Newt Gingrich drew up a Contract with America. As Speaker of the House, he promised the Republican-controlled Congress would lower taxes, make government smaller and more responsive. He promised a balanced budget, tort reform and welfare reform. Much of what Gingrich promised was passed, and Americans still feel the effects of that landmark legislation today. Recently, Mr. Gingrich has been calling for health care reform, and he's come Cleveland to speak at the Cleveland Clinic's medical innovation summit and the Town Hall series. He spoke to ideastream's Dan Moulthrop about the way to fix the nation's health care system, what happened to the Republican Revolution, and whether he'll make a run for the White House in 2008.

A Family Tradition: Interview with Lance Corporal Vince Schneider

As the death toll for U.S. troops in Iraq climbed past 2,000 last week, a local lance corporal was enjoying his last few days on leave before shipping out to Iraq. This morning, U.S. Marine Vince Schneider, of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, has returned to his company to prepare for their departure later this week. He is commander of an Amphibious Assault Vehicle, which is used to transport as many as 20 Marines at a time in combat operations. Lance Corporal Schneider grew up in Parma and is 20 years old. He will turn 21 aboard the USS Austin, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic a week or so before Thanksgiving - just before arriving in Iraq. He says the Marine service is a family tradition.
