O-DOT Chief Calls for More Bridge Money

It was one year ago that an interstate highway bridge collapsed in Minneapolis, killing 13 people and injuring 144. The incident raised questions about the safety of bridges across the country and the adequacy of government inspections. Then and now Ohio's transportation officials have minimized the chances of the Buckeye State would seeing a similar tragedy here. But questions still remain and officials say they need to stay on top of the situation. Bill Cohen reports from Columbus.

As often happens during periods of economic downturns, minorities tend to suffer more than others. A regional research group released a study Tuesday documenting the latest disparities. 31 percent of black men in the metro area aged 25 to 54 are unemployed. That's almost two-and-a-half times more than whites.

An emergency relief package is still being ironed with between the firm, the state and financial lender Comerica but company spokesman Joe Mosbrook says the Ohio Department of Development has come through with a $2 million low interest loan. Mosbrrok says, "That loan is contingent on all the other pieces coming together. So, private equity needs to be on board, Comerica needs to be on board with their piece. They are in negotiations right now and hopefully we can get a deal in the next couple of days.."

Ohio has just passed a milestone, training more than 3 thousand police officers how to deal with people who have mental illnesses. Law enforcement and judicial officials say the special training not only helps people in need, but also makes the streets safer for police. Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen reports.
President Bush in Ohio Today

CLEVELAND (AP) - A Cleveland area company that makes welding supplies is ready to welcome President Bush and show him around. The president plans to make a visit to Lincoln Electric Co., the largest employer in suburban Euclid. While at the company, he's scheduled to give a brief talk about energy and the economy.
Bush also is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser for Republican congressional candidates in Gates Mills during his brief stop in northeast Ohio. And, he'll present the President's Volunteer Service Award to Linda Campbell, a volunteer with the Junior League and cancer-fighting groups in the Cleveland area.
