Much of the public has been has been up in arms about saving Wall Street with taxpayer dollars and they've given members of Congress an earful. That sense of outrage and skepticism was also evident on WCPN's call-in program, the Sound of Ideas® on Monday. ideastream's David Molpus reports.

Wall Street In Historic Drop After House Defeats Bailout Bill

That came despite urgent pleas from President Bush and congressional leaders from both parties. When the vote was tallied, too few members of the House were apparently willing to back the unpopular bill just five weeks before Election Day. Both Democrats and Republicans voted against the measure. Stocks plummeted on Wall Street even before the 228-205 vote was taken. Wall Street closed with its biggest point drop in history, down nearly 700 points. The White House says President Bush is "very disappointed" with the vote. A spokesman says the president will meet with advisers to decide what next steps should be taken. That's also the question for Congressional leaders. Congress has been trying to adjourn so that its members can go out and campaign.

Urban Farming Advocate Receives Genius Grant

An advocate of urban farming in Milwaukee is getting some help in his effort to get locally grown foods to communities. Will Allen founded the group Growing Power and is among this year's 25 recipients of MacArthur Foundation's Genius Grants - worth $500,000. He says he's mainly focused on growing and getting food to cities. Chuck Quirmbach reports.

PUCO To Hold Hearings On Rate Hikes

Ohioans have an opportunity to sound off about how their local electric company did during the recent wind storm and power outages. The Public Utilities Commission is holding hearings across the state on what amounts to rate hike requests from major electric companies, and a separate consumer advocate agency is encouraging residential customers to show up and testify. Ryan Lippe speaks for the Office of Consumers Counsel. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen, Lippe says customers should feel free to give their views not only the prospect of paying more, but also on how their power company performed during the outages.

National City Shares Tumble After WaMu Failure

Shares of National City fell sharply today--at one point losing half their value. The stock recovered somewhat to close down about 25%. Wall Street fears National City and banks like Wachovia could be at risk after the failure and sale of Washington Mutual. ideastream®'s Dan Bobkoff reports that the fear might be overblown.
