Buying on Layaway Making a Comeback

The holiday shopping kicks off in earnest this weekend amid one of the toughest economies in years. In an effort to help customers and secure sales, retailers are pushing an old tradition: the layaway. For Ohio Public Radio, WOSU's Mandie Trimble reports from Columbus.

The head coach of the Cleveland Browns still has a job --- at least, this week. At the Browns' weekly media briefing, Romeo Crennel took all responsibility for the team's 16-6 drubbing by the Houston Texans on Sunday and said he's now focusing on next week's game. ideastream®'s David C. New York University Sociologist Troy Duster worries that's just the sort of path biomedical research is taking, and that it's leading science away from the real sources of disease and health disparity. It's a troublesome time in the newspaper business. Faced with mounting online competition, many papers are looking to shed costs. In Cleveland, the Plain Dealer is embarking on another round of buyouts. 50 newsroom jobs will be going away before the end of the year. For this week's edition of upside/downside, we consider the future of the newspaper business. The plain dealer is hardly alone when it comes to layoffs. Nearly two-thirds of the top 100 papers in this country have shed jobs in the past year. ideastream®'s Eric Wellman speaks with analyst Lauren Rich Fine.
