New Leukemia Drug for Promises to Help Older Patients

Ohio state University researchers may have found a new weapon against a common form of Leukemia. The drug is called decitabine (duh-SIGH-tuh-bean), and scientists hope it may one day give older patients a better hope for survival. Gretchen Cuda reports.

If you've waited a long time in an emergency room lately - it's probably NOT because there are more patients- but because there are fewer physicians. And it's not just primary care doctors that are in short supply. New research predicts that as early as 2010 there won't be enough general surgeons to keep up with current demand. Shareholders in Cleveland and Pittsburgh signed-off on the end of a banking institution, yesterday. PNC Financial Services was given the green light to acquire Cleveland's National City Bank --- the first acquisition to take place using money from the $700 billion federal bailout fund.
Columbus City Councilman Appointed State Treasurer

Columbus city council member Kevin Boyce has been appointed to serve as the state's treasurer. He will fill out the unexpired term of Richard Cordray, who was elected to serve as Attorney General. Boyce says his experience as the chair of the council's finance committee was good preparation for his new position. Boyce will take over the treasurer's post on January sixth. He'll be up for election in two thousand ten.

A New Era for the Ohio House

A new era begins in the Ohio House in a few weeks. Democrats will be in the majority for the first time since 1994 and they will be led by a Democrat from Beachwood. Right away, lawmakers will be wrestling with a huge budget crisis and waiting to hear about the governor's plans to reform education. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports.
