Cleveland Foundation Grant Supports After School Program For Troubled Teens

Late last week, two of Ohio's largest foundations handed out grants to address a pair of our region's biggest challenges -- an educated workforce and regional cooperation. The Gund Foundation gave a $4 million dollar contribution to the Fund for Our Economic Future which works for regional development. The Cleveland Foundation also announced numerous grants. The largest by far was a $3 million grant to help with startup costs for the Cleveland Center for Arts and Technology. When it starts up next year, it will offer after school programs for at-risk teens. ideastream®'s Eric Wellman spoke with Bob Eckhardt, The Cleveland Foundation's Senior Vice President for Programs shortly after the grant was announced.

Volunteers from Junior Achievement have been helping kids of all ages learn about money for years - volunteers like Matt Daugherty and kids like these second graders at Goldwood Primary School in Rocky River, Ohio.
University of Toledo Takes Bold Step To Increase Diversity On Its Campus

The University of Toledo has taken a big step to make college more affordable. It's offering free tuition to students in 21 Ohio cities who have at least a 3.0 grade point average and can demonstrate a clear financial need. The school says the first year of the program has been quite successful. Across the state, about 400 students have taken advantage of the scholarship, about 100 of which come from Cleveland. On Friday September 18th, The University of Toledo held a massive recruitment fair, busing in more than 500 students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. ideastream®'s Eric Wellman spoke with the school's head of admissions.

Jonathan Sender was one of the winners in our "That's My Bizne$$" contest last spring. Host Rick Jackson visited this very busy Beachwood teenager over the summer, and here's Rick’s "spin" on the business called LP Transfer. Ohio Student Helps to Set World Record for Recycling Denim

There's a new world record for the most items of clothing collected for recycling as more than 30,000 pairs of jeans were gathered this summer at Washington DC's Union Station. The magazine "National Geographic Kids" led the effort to collect old pairs of jeans from readers across the country. The jeans will be turned into insulation for rebuilding homes damaged by natural disasters. The magazine honored nine-year-old Erek Hansen of Curtice, Ohio, for organizing a huge denim drive at his school to collect more than sixteen hundred pairs of jeans for the project, including five of his own.
