Diabetes: The Constant Shadow
The stories of Northeast Ohioans who cope daily with the “constant shadow” of diabetes will be revealed through their rigorous routines of blood glucose monitoring, constant insulin injections and dietary management of the disease to avoid the dramatic fluctuations of blood sugar. Noted medical experts will explain the causes of this complicated disease, how it affects the eyes, kidneys, heart and other organs, often with dire consequences. And, we’ll learn about the newest and most advanced treatments for managing and preventing the disease.

Confronting Colon Cancer
Hosted by ideastream’s Rick Jackson, the show follows the stories of several people in Northeast Ohio who are confronting colon cancer. Nearly every phase of this disease is explored—from detection to diagnosis, from treatment to steps anyone can take to decrease their chances of getting this disease.

In the last six months, Johanna Orozco has recovered from a shotgun blast to the face and reconstructive surgery. That would have been enough, but then, there's also the trial of the teen who shot her, her former boyfriend. As she told Plain Dealer reporter Rachel Dissell, "When he actually pleaded guilty, it was more of a relief in my heart than anything else." On the program, we'll talk to Dissell and photographer Gus Chan who spent much of the last six months in operating rooms and by hospital beds, chronicling Orozco's journey. We'll also learn about the surgical science behind facial reconstructions and we'll talk about what lessons Orozco's story holds for teens and parents today. Join us, Tuesday morning at nine. The movie The Nanny Diaries is out in theaters. It's based on the novel of the same name and tells the story of a working girl from New York who's hired by a demanding woman from the upper east side to care for her rambunctious son. Let's just say it does not paint a flattering image of the nanny profession. And that's what irks Sheilagh Roth. She's the founder of The English Nanny and Governance School in Chagrin Falls, and she spoke with ideastream's Eric Wellman.

Talking Transplants

Next week, channel five newsman Jack Marschall will donate his kidney. It's not a huge deal--people donate their kidneys all the time. The thing is, Jack is donating to a complete stranger. We'll talk with Marschall about his reasons for donating and how it inspired his daughter to donate her kidney to her ailing uncle. Now, of course, none of this would be necessary were it not for a huge shortage of available organs and a correspondingly massive waiting list. We'll also be joined by a pair of surgeons who work on transplants every day. We'll find out why waiting lists are so long, how they work to prioritize the sick and dying and what could be done to alleviate the problem. You're invited to join us with your questions.
