The Ethical Considerations of Face Transplant Surgery

The Cleveland Clinic made international headlines with the news that it had completed the most complex face transplant ever, and the first on U.S. soil. This kind of risky surgery that's still highly experimental doesn't just happen over night. Plans for the transplant started more than four years ago -- honing the procedure, finding the right patient, balancing the ethics. Dr. Eric Kodish chairs the Clinic's bioethics department. He worked extensively with the Dr. Maria Siemionow, the phsycian that led the procedure. I recently spoke with Kodish in his office about how they go about weighing the risks and benefits.

Auditor and State Medicaid at Odds Over Recommendations

Ohio's auditor says the state could be saving at least $300 million a year in Medicaid costs if it would implement some recommendations made two years ago. But the agency that oversees the program in Ohio says there are good reasons why some of those suggestions haven't been put in place. Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles reports.

Job & Salary Freeze at Cleveland Clinic

Cleveland Clinic Chief Executive Dr. Toby Cosgrove announced to employees that the hospital system has instituted a hiring and salary freeze. However, the freeze does not affect employees needed for direct patient care, hospital spokeswoman Eileen Sheil said. Other exceptions must get approval from hospital leadership. There can also be exceptions to the salary freeze. "Increases for medical staff (doctors) will continue based on market conditions, and salary adjustments will be considered for other positions on an exception basis only according to market competitiveness," Cosgrove said in an e-mail to employees. A Clinic official said no layoffs are planned.
Layoffs’ Trickle Down Effect on Child Care

We've heard how the weakening economy has led to tens of thousands of layoffs in Ohio. Those layoffs have a trickle down effect. One industry directly impacted when a parent loses a job is the child care industry. Mandie Trimble from Ohio Public Radio Station WOSU in Columbus found some day care centers are getting creative, as they ride out this recession.
