Of North America’s big cities, the Cleveland area is 2.1% LESS costly than the national average. So, our houses cost less, food costs less, fun costs less. On the whole, I’d say that’s something to crow about, wouldn’t you?

10 Going Downtown
Aired: Week of 12/16/02
Source: Center for Regional Economic Issues at CWRU

Once upon a time, a shopping spree meant a trip downtown. But today, downtown retail is as dead as a doornail…. or is it?
Don’t call the undertaker! Gregory Stoup of the Center for Regional Economic Issues says downtown retail is alive and kicking: "We're one of the handful of cities that have squeaked out a positive growth over the last 5-6 years. Now the loss of Dillard's in the last year will probably negatively impact those numbers, but the broader trend in total employment in downtown remains positive."

12 The Joy of Tax Time (No, Really!)
Aired: Week of 12/30/02
Source:
U.S. Census Bureau

Oh, the joy of tax time! No, I’m not crazy, I just know that lately, Ohioans do pretty well by the tax man. When it comes to taxes, you want to get what you pay for, right? Well, 10 years ago for every dollar we gave to the government, they only spent 98 cents on us in public services. But last year, our buck went a lot further. We got a penny more from the feds than the dollar we forked over. I Don’t know about you, but I don’t mind getting more than I paid for every now and then.
