Raise For You
Aired: Week of 10/14/02
Source: Crain's
Cleveland Business
You’ve been working hard, logging extra hours,
taking on new projects. So you should get a nice bump at raise
time, right? Well, don’t count your chickens just yet!
Crain’s Cleveland Business reports that one out of 10
northeast Ohio workers will see wages frozen in 2003. Talk
about rotten eggs. |

Fatter
Paychecks
Aired: Week of 10/21/02
Source: Policy
Matters Ohio
We Ohioans are taking home fatter paychecks than we
did two decades ago. Is lugging around that extra money what’s
making us feel so tired? Guess what? On average, we are making
almost 20% more than we did in the mid-80s. But that jump
in pay comes from working longer hours. So much for catching
up on sleep. |

Location,
Location, Location!
Aired: Week of 10/28/02
Source: Center
for Regional Economic Issues at CWRU
We’ve all heard the addage: location, location,
location! Well, this time I’m not talking about real
estate. Like a valuable piece of property, Northeast Ohio
is in a great location - for reaching customers, that is.
Get this: 42% of all Americans and 40% of all Canadians live
within 500 miles of Greater Cleveland. |

The
King is Dethroned
Aired: Week of 11/4/02
Source: Center
for Regional Economic Issues at CWRU
The king has been dethroned! And I don’t mean
Elvis. 20 years ago, manufacturing was king in our region.
But service jobs reign supreme today with more than half-a-million
workers. That’s a 76% jump in the past two decades.
As they say, manufacturing has left the building. |

Costs
Less!
Aired: Week of 11/11/02
Source:
Center
for Regional Economic Issues at CWRU
If you’re like me, you like to brag about the
quality of life in Northeast Ohio. And y’know, it’s
really great to brag when you’ve got proof that you’re
right. Of North America’s big cities, the Cleveland
area is 2.1% LESS costly than the national average. So, our
houses cost less, food costs less, fun costs less. On the
whole, I’d say that’s something to crow about,
wouldn’t you? |

Good
(and Bad) News
Aired: Week of 11/18/02
Source: AeA
Publications “Cyberstates 2002”
With all this talk about hi-tech industries, how does
Ohio rank? Well, like most everything, there’s good
news and bad. Ohio’s 150,000 hi-tech workers ranks us
12th in the nation. That’s good. But in the last two
years, investments in hi-tech business dropped 72%. That’s
bad. |

The
New Rule... Global!
Aired: Week of 11/25/02
Source:
Center
for Regional Economic Issues at CWRU
Okay, here’s a new rule. When you talk about
Northeast Ohio’s economy do not, I repeat, DO NOT use
the word local! Northeast Ohio has gone global! 2,000 companies
trade internationally. 64,000 jobs involve exporting! So,
the next time you think about our “local economy”
remember… it’s not so local after all! |

Putting
the "Health" in Healthy Economy
Aired: Week of 12/2/02
Source: Ohio
Department of Development Analysis of the 2000 Census
The body business adds up to big bucks for Northeast
Ohio. More people work for the Cleveland Clinic Health System
than for any other employer in Northeast Ohio. In fact, with
a workforce of more than 21,000, the Cleveland Clinic is the
5th largest employer in the state. Talk about putting the
“health” in a healthy economy. |

Back
to the Books
Aired: Week of 12/9/02

Census; Progressive
Policy Institute
We already know that education makes you smart. But
did you know it can make you rich, too? Most of the jobs created
in the 90's were managerial or professional. What do jobs
like those need? Higher education. What’s the result?
Higher salaries. In fact, a four year college degree will
get you almost $22,000 more per year than a high school diploma
So how does Ohio rank for the number of people with advanced
degrees? Not too high: 29th in the country. Back to the books,
people! |

Going
Downtown
Aired: Week of 12/16/02
Source:
Center
for Regional Economic Issues at CWRU
Once upon a time, a shopping spree meant a trip downtown.
But today, downtown retail is as dead as a doornail….
or is it?
Don’t call the undertaker! Gregory Stoup of the Center
for Regional Economic Issues says downtown retail is alive
and kicking: "We're one of the handful of cities that
have squeaked out a positive growth over the last 5-6 years.
Now the loss of Dillard's in the last year will probably negatively
impact those numbers, but the broader trend in total employment
in downtown remains positive." |

Get
to Give
Aired: Week of 12/23/02
Source: Northeast
Ohio Regional Retail Analysis
Next time you go shopping, remember: you’re
not just getting something, you’re giving something
too.You may not need that new sweater, but Northeast Ohio
needs it - or at least, it needs the money that retail generates.
The region gains more than $345 MILLION annually from the
retail sector. And if you don’t shop, think of all the
people that could lose their jobs because the store had to
close! 20% of the region’s work force is employed in
the retail sector. So go get something... you’ll be
giving back to our local economy. |

The
Joy of Tax Time (No, Really!)
Aired: Week of 12/30/02
Source: U.S.
Census Bureau
Oh, the joy of tax time! No, I’m not crazy,
I just know that lately, Ohioans do pretty well by the tax
man. When it comes to taxes, you want to get what you pay for,
right? Well, 10 years ago for every dollar we gave to the
government, they only spent 98 cents on us in public services.
But last year, our buck went a lot further. We got a penny
more from the feds than the dollar we forked over. I Don’t
know about you, but I don’t mind getting more than I
paid for every now and then. |
