Ideas: Steelyard Commons Update

If you don't regularly travel on the northbound side of the Jennings Freeway, brace yourself for a new view. The largest open-air shopping center in Cuyahoga County - and the first new major shopping space in the city in more than 20 years - is just weeks away from opening on the former ISG Steel site. While it's announcement was decried by some businesses, and protested by potential neighbors and historians, its addition to the near west side of Cleveland is all but here. What's gone on there these past few months? Rick Jackson will take us to the site and talk with the developers about their project, and their dreams for what it might become.

Ideas: Making Sense of Place

The documentary film Making Sense of Place: Cleveland premieres this week on Ideas. Funded by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, Making Sense of Place explores how policy makers, community groups and other have wrestled with urban decay, the erosion of inner-ring suburbs and the explosive growth of outer suburbs. Following the 60-minute program will be a 30-minute examination of what Cleveland needs to do and what is being done right now to address the challenges outlined in the film. Guests include Hunter Morrison from Youngstown State University; Richard Fleming, president and chief executive of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association who talks about what his city did to overcome some of the same issues facing Cleveland; and a local developer who will discuss the risks and rewards that go along with investing hundreds of millions of dollars in downtown Cleveland. The film producers also plan a series of community viewing/discussion and we will have information about how you can become involved in those efforts. Order the Making Sense of Place DVD here.



Ideas: Voices and Choices: Town Hall Meeting; New Wireless Network

Last weekend saw the culmination of 20 months of work in the Voices and Choices campaign, with nearly 900 people turning out for a town hall meeting to discuss the initiative's priorities. Rick Jackson was also there in Akron and will report on that session. Then he'll interview leaders of the Voices and Choices campaign as to what will be done with the thousands of findings and hundreds of suggestions given during the project; OneCommunity is a nonprofit provider of community-based ultra broadband networking services, which last week rolled out a new program in conjunction with CASE, the major East Side hospitals, and with many University Circle businesses. It allows internet users to connect wirelessly throughout a five-mile radius of Cleveland's John Hay High School But the program has many other unique uses, and we'll talk with one of the creators, as well as demonstrate some of the effective capabilities of the plan.

With the designation of Cleveland as the nation's poorest city once again, we'll re-examine the idea of poverty, its' causes and impact. The U.S. Census Bureau found that 2005 numbers indicate 32.4% of the residents in the City of Cleveland are living below the federal poverty line - the highest rate in America. Our continuing conversation about the Voices and Choices campaign examines part of the issue, and ideas also spoke with noted author and Harvard University Sociology Professor Dr. William Julius Wilson.

Cleveland's St. Clair-Superior neighborhood is going to the dogs. Actually, it's a new campaign to attract people into the area that has everyone "barking." We'll explain how the Year of the Dog is playing out in Cleveland. But looking at that lead us into a bigger story, regarding the impact Asian owned business have in Cuyahoga County and Northeast Ohio? It's probably a lot stronger than you would think. Rick Jackson goes to Cleveland's St. Clair Superior Neighborhood, where Asian businesses are not just growing in number, but thriving, and are now attracting residential and retail business as well. We'll look at the future of Cleveland's near-East Side, and talk with advocates for the Asian community.

We'll look at the continuing endeavors to regionalize Northeast Ohio by introducing you to the newest player in the effort, NEOSO - the NorthEast Ohio Sourcing Office. We'll also be joined by a panel of Mayors from Cleveland suburbs to talk about their ideas for continued cooperation among towns, and the evolution of Northeast Ohio as an economic district.

What Cuyahoga County suburb is in the midst of its largest building boom since the middle 60s, adding new housing, business, retail and even a nationally recognized tech center all at once?
