The fifth installment of A QUIET CRISIS focuses on the importance
of Cleveland arts, artists and cultural organizations as an asset to
our region's economic development. A QUIET CRISIS: Arts &
the Economy will examine the contributions that artists, art and
cultural organizations make in the strengthening of our regional economy.
The special will simulcast on WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN® ideastream
Thursday, May 23 at 8 p.m. A rebroadcast will air on WVIZ/PBS Sunday,
May 26 at 2 p.m. and Monday, May 27 at 11 p.m. Special coverage will
appear in the Forum section of the Sunday edition of The Plain Dealer
on May 26.
Panelist
participants include: Art Falco, President, Playhouse Square Foundation;
Thomas Schorgl, President & CEO, Community Partnership for Arts and
Culture; Jerry Sue Thornton, President, Cuyahoga Community College;
Peter Lawson Jones, Commissioner, Cuyahoga County; Kathleen Cerveny,
Senior Program Officer, Arts and Culture, The Cleveland Foundation;
William Busta, Independent Curator. Dave Pignanelli, Director of News
and information for ideastreamsm hosts the program. Reporter Joe Frolik
of The Plain Dealer moderates the panel discussion.
As
a postlude to the May 15 Cleveland City Council's Arts and Cultural
Summit, some of the issues that will be discussed by the panelists will
include: how to better promote Cleveland's arts and cultural assets;
the resources that the arts and cultural sector have which can benefit
our region's economic growth; what can be done to provide life-long
arts education to citizens; and how can arts organizations and artists
can best collaborate with businesses, government and other community
organizations.
Another
aspect of the local arts scene will be covered on May 31, when Dee Perry,
host of 90.3 WCPN's Around Noon program will feature an artist
forum on the state of the arts in Cleveland. Discussion will focus on
how to make it as an artist in Northeast Ohio; the panel will also share
their thoughts about the arts as a catalyst for the regional economy.
A
QUIET CRISIS is an on-going, multimedia project involving WVIZ/PBS
and 90.3 WCPN® ideastream and The Plain Dealer. Its goal
is to better inform viewers, listeners and readers about how the region's
economy affects their lives.
