Big Bets
Press Release
September 24, 2002
The debate over whether to build a new convention center is far from
over. But is that the only major project that will have any real impact
on our local economy? Are there any other so called “Big Bets”
that need to be considered?
On
Thursday, October 2 at 8pm, a distinguished panel of local experts will
participate in a special roundtable discussion A QUIET CRISIS:
Big Bets, to be broadcast on WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN. The latest
installment in the ongoing multimedia series A QUIET CRISIS
examines what’s next – or what should be next—in major
investments for economic development in Northeast Ohio.
A QUIET CRISIS: Big Bets addresses the continued debate over
whether or not to build a new convention center; and explores other
“Big Bet” development projects: Who’s gambling on
them, and how will they impact our regional economy? Discussion will
center on issues surrounding future development projects, the measurable
impact they will have on our region’s economy and on taxpayer’s
pocketbooks, and whether or not these projects are worth the risk.
Panelists include: Brad Whitehead, Senior Program Officer for Economic
Development Initiatives, The Cleveland Foundation; Eric Von Hendrix,
President, MWV Pinnacle Management Co.; James Levin, Artistic Director,
Cleveland Public Theatre; Ruth Durack, Director Kent State University
Urban Design Center; Lisa Hong, Vice President, eQuest Engineering;
and David Gilbert, President, Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. Dave
Pignanelli, Director of News and Information for ideastream,
will host the program. Joe Frolik, Associate Editor of The Plain
Dealer, will moderate the panel discussion.
A QUIET CRISIS: Big Bets will premiere on WVIZ/PBS and 90.3
WCPN ideastream Thursday, October 2 at 8pm. The broadcast
will repeat on WVIZ/PBS Sunday, October 5 at 3pm and Monday, October
6 at 11:30pm and on 90.3 WCPN Wednesday, October 8 at 8pm. A special
five-minute feature segment will also air on 90.3 WCPN during the Morning
News Thursday, October 2. Special coverage will also appear in
the Forum section of The Plain Dealer on Thursday, October
2 and again in the Sunday, October 5, Forum section.
