Leveraging Lake
Erie Press Release
September 10, 2004
Northeast Ohio is nestled along a great natural resource. However, are
we utilizing all the benefits Lake Erie has to offer? An exploration
of how we might best leverage our Great Lake -including Lake Erie’s
potential as a catalyst for the regeneration of the local economy- will
be addressed in the next installment of A QUIET CRISIS-The
Road Back. The program premieres Thursday, September 16
at 8pm on WVIZ/PBS ideastream, with a simulcast scheduled on 90.3 WCPN.
Videotaped
entirely on location at key venues around Lake Erie, this episode of
A QUIET CRISIS features one-on-one interviews
with people who have different but significant perspectives on how to
better use Lake Erie to stimulate our regional economy. Participants
include: Chris Ronayne, Director, City Planning Commission, City of
Cleveland; Robert C. Farley, President, Team Neo; David Beach, Executive
Director, EcoCity Cleveland; and Dr. David Orr, Professor of Environmental
Studies and Politics and Chair of the Environmental Studies Program,
Oberlin College.
Plain Dealer associate editor Joe Frolik conducts these on-one-one
discussions. Rick Jackson, ideastream reporter/producer, is the program
host.
Rebroadcasts of this program have been scheduled as follows. On WVIZ/PBS:
Sunday, September 19 at 3pm. On 90.3 WCPN: Wednesday, September 22 at
8pm. Archived articles, commentary, radio reports and a transcription
of each of the program interviews will all be available for download
on wcpn.org, wviz.org and cleveland.com.
Since its launch three years ago, the A QUIET CRISIS
series has focused its research and multiple-media content on reinvigorating
Northeast Ohio’s sluggish economy. As key economic indicators
(increasing unemployment and poverty rates, and the recession’s
negative effect on the manufacturing sector), pointed towards dire consequences
for Northeast Ohio, ideastream and The Plain Dealer partnered
to pool their editorial, and other, resources. The goal of the partnership
was to create a forum (with enduring print and other media products)
that would encourage public discourse leading to positive economic and
other development in Northeast Ohio.
To
re-emphasize the goals of A QUIET CRISIS
and to signal a renewed focus for action and positive results, the sub-title
The Road Back has been added to the series title. Given Lake
Erie’s significance to the region, arguably the primary resource
and physical entity that defines Northeast Ohio, looking at how to leverage
the lake seems an appropriate way to introduce the new program title.
A QUIET CRISIS-The Road Back is an on-going,
multimedia project involving WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN ideastream in partnership
with The Plain Dealer.
