Cholesterol plays a major role in a healthy heart for men, women and children. Parents who have high levels of cholesterol most likely have children who also exhibit high levels.

Cholesterol, according to Akron Children's Hospital, "is a waxy substance produced by the liver." It is found in the foods that come from animals, such as meat, whole-milk dairy products, seafood, and egg yolks. All these foods can cause high levels of cholesterol. Vegetables, fruits, and grains do not contain any cholesterol.

Heredity, diet and obesity are the main factors of high cholesterol levels in everyone's body. According to The Ohio State University Medical Center, "all adults over the age of 20 should have their cholesterol level checked at least once every five years."

If someone is at risk or already has a high blood cholesterol level there are many actions that person can take to lower the risk of heart disease. A healthier diet, exercise and medicine are just a few that start improving the heart.

Being aware of the facts about cholesterol will help you and your loved ones live a healthier life. The following links offer a better understanding about the risks of high cholesterol for adults and children.
