History Reasons for the Project Maintaining Access to Downtown

For the past three years, the Ohio Department of Transportation has been making plans to rehabilitate the entire I-90 Inner Belt, traveling from Tremont to the Inner Belt Curve (Dead Man's Curve). In that time, ODOT has meet with the City of Cleveland and citizens in hundreds of meetings to develop a plan best suited for the area.

  • 90.3 at 9: Inner Belt Call-in Program (Aired Nov. 16, 2005)
A bridge - north or south? City, county and state officials have been talking about building a signature bridge for Innerstate 90. The idea is to have the structure to have a world-class design, an exciting symbol of hope for the region. County officials say build it south, state reps say build northwest. Listen to the 90.3 at 9 program on the inner belt bridge project.
  • Debating the Inner Belt (Aired Dec. 22, 2005)
A proposed revamping of Cleveland's inner belt has local leaders debating various options. But since most of the money to pay for it is funneled through the Ohio Department of Transportation, that agency holds the ultimate decision-making authority. In the past few weeks, the Cuyahoga and Cleveland Planning Commissions have pressed ODOT to evaluate other alternatives. But ODOT seems locked in its own plan. If Cleveland doesn't approve it the project could founder - with millions of federal dollars diverted to other projects instead. ideastream's Lisa Ann Pinkerton reports.
  • Inner Belt Update with Lisa Ann Pinkerton (Aired Dec. 28, 2005)
Cleveland's inner belt is due for an overhaul. The highway system that brings commuters into and out of Cleveland is 50 years old. Much has changed in those 50 years: industry has migrated, the suburbs have grown, and Cleveland's population has shrunk. Plans are now on the drawing board to bring the system up to date to handle todays traffic patterns - and tomorrow's, as best they can be predicted. But consensus on the inner belt project seems a long way off. ideastream's Lisa Ann Pinkerton is following its progress and joins us now to help us understand just where it stands.
  • Bridge Alignment Settled by Leaders (Aired Jan. 27, 2006)
Hopes for a signature bridge to replace the current I-90 innerbelt bridge were squashed last week. ideastream's Lisa Ann Pinkerton has the report.
