Safety, congestion and age are the main reasons Ohio is embarking on the biggest highway project in Ohio's history. The budget estimate for the whole project is just under $900 million.
According to ODOT, the Inner Belt Central interchange - from Jacobs Field to the lakeshore - is the number one highway in Ohio for auto accidents; 800 crashes a year. ODOT says that averages to around two crashes per day. The general plan is to build a new bridge to ease congestion and consolidate entrances and exits though downtown.
