Traditional Resources Stifling Creativity?

Aired February 21, 2005

Like many so-called legacy economies in the industrial Midwest, Ohio is attempting to grow it's hi-tech sector, seeking the prize of value-added products and higher paying jobs. As the region reaches for the shiny brass ring that could pull it from recession, what characteristics will make the journey easier? What will hold Northeast Ohio back? Our multimedia series, The Region's Resume, will examine that question. It will consider how Northern Ohio appears as a job applicant, especially in the hi-tech sector. What are the region's strengths? How about our weaknesses and what could be done to improve them? Many qualities stand out - but many appear lackluster. Turns out Ohio has a bank of uncommon assets acquired during its rich industrial past. But, as ideastream's Janet Babin reports, those same traditional resources could also be stifling creativity.
