WCPN Reports on Waterfront Development
Waterfront
Planning
March 18, 2003
Cleveland is a city that was founded on the water. Lake Erie provided
the benefits of waterborne transportation and the Cuyahoga River offered
industrial sites close to Great Lakes shipping. During the Rust Belt years,
many of those enterprises declined and the city turned its back on the
water. But recent renovation in the Flats and Mayor Jane Campbell's new
waterfront planning initiative have revitalized interest in what a focus
on the water could do for the community. One Cleveland group that promotes
sustainable urban design has created a tool to help citizens identify
elements of a successful waterfront. ideastream's Karen
Schaefer reports.
Concerns
Over LTV Pellet Terminal
May 22, 2002
Lorain residents are eagerly anticipating the move of the iron-ore pellet
terminal that will be taken apart and reassembled in Cleveland, already
planning the re-development of the city's waterfront. Meanwhile, some
Clevelanders still want answers about where the old LTV terminal will
end up once it gets here and how it will affect the environment. 90.3
WCPN®'s Renita Jablonski reports.
Waning
Activity Hinders Port of Cleveland
May 16, 2002
The Port of Cleveland is a trade link to the rest of the world and was
the foundation of its trade and prosperity. But the image of Cleveland
as a busy port city is waning. It's the third largest port on the Great
Lakes but shipping statistics are down. That's why some industry leaders
are questioning the role and the future of the port. 90.3 WCPN®'s
Mike West has this report.
Issue
10 - The Port Authority Levy
May 6, 2002
Tuesday, May 7th, is Primary Day in Ohio, and one of the few regional
issues on the ballot involves a little-known agency that wields a lot
of power. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority is asking for a
five-year renewal of its .13 mill levy. The levy campaign has both powerful
allies and detractors. 90.3 WCPN®'s April Baer reports.
New
Park Possibilities in Cleveland's Flats District
May 2, 2002
The Ohio Canal Corridor continues planning for the Canal Basin Park Project.
This past weekend two teams of landscape architects presented design ideas
for review by the canal Basin steering committee. 90.3 WCPN®'s David
C. Barnett conducted an interview with one of the presenting architects,
Ignacio, Bunster Ossa.
Dike
14 "Open House" This Weekend
May 1, 2002
This spring, a massive planning process is underway, asking Clevelanders
what they would like to see along Lake Erie's shore. Meanwhile, the state
wants your opinion on a particular piece of shoreline, not far from Gordon
Park. It's called Dike 14. It was created by fill dirt dredged up from
the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority
like to continue to use the land for fill, but others say it's an ideal
spot for a park or preserve. This Saturday, May 4th from 10:00 AM to 3:00
PM, Greater Clevelanders are invited to see what Dike 14 has to offer,
and talk about possible uses. 90.3 WCPN®'s April Baer spoke with Genevieve
Ray, a Planning Consultant who is organizing public meetings about Dike
14, on behaalf of the state Department of Natural Resources.
Redesigning
Cleveland's Waterfront
February 22, 2002
For decades, the city of Cleveland literally turned its back on Lake Erie
and the Cuyahoga River. Now improved water quality has drawn many people
to view the waterways as two of Cleveland's biggest assets. But who's
deciding how the lakefront and riverfront should be developed? Many residents
think it's time for the people's voice to be heard. At a recent conference,
civic and government leaders laid out a number of new plans that could
fundamentally change the way Clevelanders connect with water. They're
calling for more public access - and more public participation in the
planning process. 90.3 WCPN®'s Karen Schaefer reports.
The
Continuing Debate Over Dike 14
February 1, 2002
It began with birds, but it's turned into a battle between local, state,
and federal governments. Dike 14 is an off-shore Army Corps containment
disposal site near Gordon State Park. It's filled with 23 years worth
of sediments dredged from the Cuyahoga. It's also home to hundreds of
species of migratory birds. Last year the Corps capped the side and turned
it over to the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, which wants to
add more fill. But the state wants to make a new park on the 88-acre dike.
Now city and conuty officials have joined the fray, hoping to convince
the Corps to let the Port dump its dredgings elsewhere. 90.3 WCPN®'s
Karen Schaefer has this report on the debate over Dike 14.
Cleveland/Cuyahoga
County Port Authority:
The Power of Development Financing
January 25, 2002
In the midst of a national recession, Cleveland seems to be struggling
with more than its fair share of economic bad news. The recent bankruptcy
of LTV Steel, job losses at Ford and TRW, and reduced funding from both
the state and the county have hit Northeast Ohio hard. Local leaders are
trying to attract new high-tech industries like bio-technology, but most
are still a long way from making significant contributions to the local
economy. But there’s one often-overlooked source of local funding that
could help keep companies in the region and make it easier for new firms
to locate here. 90.3 WCPN®’s Karen Schaefer has this report on the
Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority.
Lake
Erie Ferry Service Closer to Reality
January 21, 2002
A new U.S.-Canadian ferry service is one step closer to becoming a
reality. Supporters say it could expand the market for Cleveland businesses.
90.3 WCPN®'s Karen Schaefer reports.
The
Future of Whiskey Island
January 11, 2002
At
the mouth of the Cuyahoga River on Lake Erie – just inside the Cleveland
harbor – lies a tiny plot of land known as Whiskey Island. Once the site
of a distillery, the island today is home to a salt mine, a small marina
– and some of the last remaining undeveloped lakefront in Cleveland. One
local group would like to keep the island open to public access and turn
it into a public park. But competing interests could relocate the Port
of Cleveland to Whiskey Island. 90.3 WCPN®’s Karen Schaefer reports.
The
Fight for the Future of Dike 14
March 8, 2001
It may still feel like winter, but the spring migration of birds over
Lake Erie has already begun. Nearly 300 different species of birds now
stop to rest and feed at a site on Cleveland's shoreline. Dike 14 is man-made
land near Gordon State Park east of University Circle. There's a long-standing
plan to make a new recreational park on the site. But preservationists
say the Port Authority's intention to level Dike 14 will destroy an important
wildlife habitat. 90.3's Karen Schaefer reports.
