Ozone is a relatively simple molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms bound together, and yet it has dramatically different effects depending upon its location. Close to the surface of the Earth where there are large concentrations of ozone near the ground, it becomes toxic to living things. Ozone which is near to the ground is commonly called smog. It is a harmful irritant which is known to cause adverse health effects. Smog is formed when organic chemicals and oxygenated compounds react under intense sunlight. High concentrations of ground-level ozone can cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, headaches, nausea and eye and throat irritation. Also, ozone may increase the susceptibility of the lungs to infections, allergens, and other pollutants. The following web sites are presented to help inform you about ozone information in your area.
